Smoothies have been popular for years now, however the reality is that some so called ‘healthy’ smoothies are far from healthy. There are some healthy smoothie options but although they look like a tasty treat they don’t taste good at all. The fact is that sometimes the more healthy ingredients you use in a smoothie, the worse it can taste.

The good news is that not all smoothies need to be packed with high sugar fruits or bitter vegetables. Combining the right mix of ingredients that you love can result in a win win combination. The best thing to do is experiment until you find that perfect mix that makes you go YEAH!

Here are some great ideas to get you started:

Strawberries and Bananas – A classic fresh tasting smoothie

For those who have never tried making their own smoothie, here is a basic recipe to start experimenting with. With a nice sweet flavour, this smoothie is also packed with vitamins and a bit of protein to boot. There is no need to go out and spend lots of money on a fancy food processor, a simple blender will do just fine.

What you need:

1. One banana

2. One cup of low fat milk

3. A cup of ice

4. Roughly ¾ cup of no fat yogurt

5. About six strawberries

The smoothie process:

Toss all the yummy ingredients into the blender and mix to the texture of your liking. When you have made a few you will have the courage to try some different ingredients, even throw in some vegetables or even some spinach. The options really are endless.

Mixed Berry Smoothie

What you need:

1. Approximately one cup of fresh or frozen berries – strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries are a natural fiber boot when added to your smoothie.

2. About 1/2 cup of low fat milk

3. A few ice blocks

4. Roughly 1/2 cup of no fat yogurt

The smoothie process:

Toss all your ingredients into the blender and mix away until your happy with the texture. Another great tasting ingredient to try is peanut butter, rich in fiber and of course it tastes great. Of course, if you suffer from any sort of peanut allergies, peanut butter is obviously not a wise choice.

Experimenting with other ingredients may surprise your taste buds, adding things like flaxseed (ground up) or some wheat grass may be just the ticket.
